Even if pink isn't the color of the season, I would still like to share two cakes I've done recently. The first one was made to go with this lovely printable by Parties by Hardie (printable available on Etsy). My goal was to duplicate the clean and modern look of the printable, which I was so thrilled to use as inspiration!

I had created a similar pink cake design recently to top a cupcake tower where the cupcakes were decorated with more sugar flowers and pearls. When I received the request for a ballerina cake, I just thought it would work perfectly with a figurine topper. I added a second tier to add a few inches and voila! The picture was taken in the box just before the client came to pick up the cake, but I liked it to not take a quick picture!

A woodland Snow White party

Leave it to Leesa and the Send In The Clowns team to transport you into magical places with their fabulous kids parties. The latest is a Snow White fairy tale. No details were forgotten on the kids tables, were party guests found sweet and savory treats, wands, and tutu dress bags (how cute are those?) to save their treasures in the most fashionable way. Wood pieces and containers were use to create an enchanted forest feel.

And the cake... I needed a LOT of convincing before accepting to do a doll cake, especially when I had this woodland tiered cake design in mind! Thanks to my daughter for letting me borrow her Rapunzel doll to take measurements, test out the dress and how I would "glue" the fondant on the shiny plastic (not a medium a cake designer is use to work with!)... It was a funny sight, I should have documented the process!

Little Cakes, Big Changes

I feel like this post is long overdue. Not sure where to start, but here it is anyways! Last Spring, I announced that our family was going to move out of state. The timing was perfect: I was extremely overworked and sleep deprived (moving would give me the chance to rest!), both kids would start school (first grade and kindergarten), we would be able to afford our dream house and best of all, have real winters!

So I made plans to move out of my commercial space, broke the (very hard to announce) news to my employees and clients, lined up the moving company and found to perfect neighborhood for our family to move to.

But life being what it is, the move did not happened as planned. It did not happened at all. My husband just could not see the picture of our lives over there coming together. He was very nervous, felt like we would be putting our family at risk. I was heartbroken to see that dream go, but at the same time relieved that I could keep Blue Cupcake alive, and keep doing what I adore.

At the same time, I had learned enough during the past three years to know that things could not go back to what they were. I remembered reading this post from a fellow mom-baker-business-owner about how overwhelming it is to manage the business and family life. Every sentence describes what my life was, week after week. Yes, I was that mom too. And it was not okay.

So after taking some time off this summer, doing a lot of thinking, and missing my passion for baking and decorating, I decided to accept orders again. But the conditions are now very different: it is just me, in a much smaller space, doing only a few orders every week, and taking my time to make them as perfect as I can, because I LOVE IT!

And on the other side I get to drive my kids to school every day, meet again with friends I haven't seen in a few years and make new ones, visit my family on the East coast, volunteer at the school garden, cook for my family, enjoy time with my husband, be a healthy person again, be a family again. And I LOVE IT!

A Sesame Street Party

I may have mentioned this a few times in the past, but I just love to receive my client's beautiful party pictures! There are many great party website out there, and sometimes it can be overwhelming to see all those perfectly staged parties. The pictures I receive are from real events, organized by moms and sometimes event planners, and give you plenty of ideas you can use for you own celebrations.

Sugar Flowers

For as long as I can remember, I have always been so impressed by sugar work, especially flowers. The complexity of the petals, made and assembled one at a time, is truly impressive to me. It was (and still is) a dream of mine to take a class to learn to make them. But with family life and running a small business, it simply never happened.

I still decided to give sugar flowers a try after studying from books and looking at many pictures. So bare with me please as these flowers are very basic, but I am still trilled with the sophisticated touch they add to cakes and cupcakes. Let me know what you think!

The colors of this wedding were white and purple, and the clients wanted a simple, clean look,
with of course a big flower on the cake.

For a 35th birthday party, we were working with really bright colors throughout the dessert display.
I use white as a base for the cake to make all the flowers pop.

This is a cupcake tower, and the bride wanted those traditional Korean ducks as a topper,
and some hibiscus throughout. The ducks give a fun touch to this ivory display.

Lastly, I made this cake complete with a full dessert table for a sweet 16th celebration. The cake, with the small white flowers and ruffles, is inspired by the dress of the birthday girl.

I just received those pictures of this fun cowboy themed party we did the desserts for a few weeks ago, and I had to post them right away! The client did the set up herself and I just love how it turned out. The denim background, the letters, the haystacks and vintage milk crate, it's all perfect! And just how cute is that little cowboy?

Wow... My mom always said to me "you'll see that the older you get, the faster time flies", and how right was she... It feels like just last year I was welcoming home my second child, and my arms were full with the two most beautiful babies. But not quite, they are already 6 and 5! Simply unbelievable...

This year, Oceane was right there with me to plan and get everything ready for her party. From thinking of fun ideas to baking her own cake (by that I mean licking the bowl) and packaging the party favors for her friends, she was as busy as I was. Since she sometimes comes with me on deliveries at The Coop, it was her biggest wish to have there her very own party. She did not want a theme, but desserts. Lots of yummy desserts, including pies and ice cream. I was right on it.

I was inspired by the shelves used to display merchandise in the front room. Why not transform them into the dessert station? I found beautiful papers to do the old school garlands and colorful fabrics to set the tone. All the treats, fresh flowers and party favors filled the space to create this fun summer display.

I was so excited when Jenny, a long time client at the farmer's market, asked me to bake the cake and desserts for her wedding. She wanted everything simple to go with the rustic feel of the venue. Just how beautiful is the bride?

Here is some more colorful ideas for all of us with boys! The first set of pictures is from a fire truck party designed by the ladies at The COOP. I love how my little sugar dalmatians and the stuffed ones decorating the kids table match so perfectly.

This second party, still held at The COOP in Studio City, had a airplane and helicopter theme. So we decorated the cake and cupcakes with both elements to create a fun cupcake tower.

4th of July Celebration

My dear friend Marie-Eve and her family are on their way (they are literally on the plane as I am writing this!). Since they had a horrible week, I decided to welcome them with a 4th of July celebration that will hopefully make them smile again!

As far as the inspiration for the treats table, two things came to mind... My friends LOVE sodas. Last time they were here, they drove out of their ways to get to this specialty soda shop. And you should see the stunning, vintage Coca-Cola cooler in their dining room! So this is why I filled a bucket with a variety of artisanal and classic sodas. Every 4th of July, it is our family tradition to make hot fudge sundaes with brownies. Once a year, it is pure indulgence... I bake this dense, rich chocolate cake that we top with our favorite vanilla ice cream and home made fudge sauce. My husband has a collection of sundae cups his grand mother gave him a long time ago. This is the perfect occasion to take them out of the top shelf!

Since I had less than a week to realize this project, I ordered some fabrics to make the tablecloths, runners, napkins and banners. No sewing involved (no time!), just straight cuts. I also ordered the beautiful Americana pinwheels. I went to the flower district first thing Saturday morning and made the flower arrangements last night. The backyard is ready, and I am now working on dinner!

Colorful Girly Cake

This cake was born after being up working non stop on different projects for almost 48 hours... The client had sent a picture of "quilling" art work, and since it was my first time seeing this type of art, I really had no idea where to start. So Ernae, who was right there with me for another long night, said she had taken a quilling class many years back. So here we are cutting strips of fondant, rolling and twisting, and voila! This is super simple if I compare to all the amazing quilling masterpieces you can see online, but I really like the effect on the cake.


I added a quilling detail on the belt of the little girl, and her skirt is done using the same technique as the ruffled "paper" flowers on the cake

It is funny how sometimes we get multiple orders with similar themes all at once. Recently, we got many requests for game themed cakes and cupcakes. I was able to captured pictures of some of them, so here they are!

Here are some fun Angry Birds cupcakes and a cake made for a Trio Events birthday celebration. I have played the game a few times, but my 6 year old son was my design consultant on this. He gave me all the pointers to make everything look as close to the real thing as possible!

We did an 80's theme cake for a roller skating party. This is everything the client wanted: a retro roller skate, pac man, some zebra print and the color hot pink. Here's how we combined all the elements!

When I first started with the company, I would always take the time to take pictures of every project. Now that we are doing so much more, the cakes and cupcakes are not documented as much for many reasons: no time, someone else is setting up at the event, we have already made and posted pictures of a similar project, or I just forget to bring the camera with me! Well this past weekend, I made a point of taking a picture or two of every orders (I am missing a beautiful Rapunzel cupcake tower - oh no...). Most are taking quickly at the bakery with the stainless refrigerator as a background, but it is better than nothing, right? So this is what a Blue Cupcake weekend looks like!

The theme of this party, designed by Jennifer Currier of La Soiree Chic, is fairy tales. The tables all had a different theme, such as Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Frog Prince and the Princess and the Pea. I always like the creativity that goes into a boy/girl theme, and this one was no exception!

This mermaid cake is one of my all time favorites. We first created the design for this event, and it's been a classic ever since.

We also made desserts for a wedding. The bride feel in love with our coconut cake and wanted to keep it simple, while having touches of Tiffany blue on the cake and other treats. I don't have pictures of the display, but here is the cake and macarons.

This other cake was made for a tea and cupcakes party. We also did the coordinating cupcakes with tea cups, tea pots and mini desserts on stands.

This very simple cake was made for a baby shower, along with mini cupcakes. The lamb was inspired by a fun chair the baby will have in his room.

Another classic cake we do on a regular basis is the barn yard cake. No picture of the rest of the clan, but this cupcake and cake tower is always beautiful!

And last but not least... The client wanted to surprise her uncle with a cake that would showcase his passion for gardening and cooking. I had so much fun making all the little details, it takes a long time but I really like doing that kind of detailed work!

Huge thanks to my handy husband who imagined and built the super solid structure that made building the tower possible, and also making it to destination in one piece possible! I was so excited when finding out that I would decorate an apple cake for a first birthday celebration. The client told us "the theme is apples... because she likes apples". How simple and great is that? I love when a baby can actually know what the cake is about - that's why we did lots of apples everywhere! We also made cupcakes and single serving apple pies for the event. One of my personal favorite cake to date, for sure!

I have been waiting to post the pictures of this cake for a little while, and I am so happy to finally share! Ernae did the setup of this table because the event happened to be at the same day and time as the Cupcake Challenge, so I just saw it from my own eyes a few days ago. So here it is, a jewel inspired dessert table created by Trio Events.

We also got the chance to make a birthday cake for Perez Hilton birthday last night in Los Angeles. The Hollywood Candy Girls invited us to take part of their stunning candy display, could not have been more thrilled with the way the cake blended in so perfectly!

This was our first time actually sculpting an animal of this size. Gabby (who used to intern with us) sculpted the puppy out of cereal treats and I finished it with piped buttercream to create the hair and added some fondant details.

Since starting the business, we have always received a lot of requests to do cakes and cupcakes with licensed characters or themes. When it was just me (for the first year or so, I was doing it all!), I just had to say no. I wanted to create an image of my own, and how could I be different making another Mickey Mouse cake?

Once in a while, a very persisting client would simply not take no for an answer! Because I really wanted (and still do more than ever) our work to be one of a kind, I then agreed to do it only if I could do my own version of the theme.

I always say that there is no need spending hours trying to duplicate a character. In the end, even if it is almost perfect, it can only be a not-so-perfect version of the original. So what's the point? That's why I like to create a figurine of the child dressed up as his or her favorite character. It is so much more personal and fun!

So we have designed some elaborate displays, some more simple. And in between I have created my very own Mickey Mouse design! In the end, there are no mistake about where the inspiration came from and the clients are always happy!

Football, train and Mickey

I would like to start this post by saying THANK YOU to all our clients and readers as Blue Cupcake celebrates it's 3rd anniversary! Three years of cupcakes and cakes, farmer's markets, deliveries, trip to the stores, answering emails and retuning calls, learning and meeting amazing people... Not to forget, LONG hours of work and many sleepless nights! But looking back, it is all well worth the ride!

Also, a big thanks to everyone who came to see us at the Cupcake Challenge last week. It was an incredibly busy week for us, and the event was just as crazy! So many people, so many bakeries and chefs, food bloggers... Just to give you an idea, we served 1300 cupcakes in less than 2 hours. So much fun!!

And now the pictures! Here are some "boy" themed cakes, cupcakes and desserts we did in the past few weeks. This first one was for a birthday party, you've guessed it, during Super Bowl weekend. The colors are based on the invitation.

And those last images were provided by our client (Photography: Robe Photo), who celebrated his son first birthday this past weekend at The COOP in Studio City. The cake, cupcakes and desserts are inspired by the famous Mickey Mouse. Since we always do our own twist on licensed characters, we suggested to make a figurine of the birthday boy wearing Mickey's ears. It gives the cake a very personal touch, and a sugar figurine as a keepsake!

Her ice cream and sorbets are a pure delight and are very well known by foodies and food critics around town. Just can't resist the salted caramel ice cream, or the vanilla orange sorbet, and the smell of freshly baked waffle cones. Simply amazing!

We have worked on so many fun projects lately, this post is long overdue! This first cake is to celebrate a 60th birthday. Don't you wish you could have such a colorful cake for your 60th? We took inspiration from the invitation and just had fun with it. The gumball machine is my favorite part. It was only a small detail on the invite but I couldn't resist making it front and center.

We just love to receive pictures of our treats from our dear clients! This is a collection of pictures that shows the creativity in the themes and the displays. Since we don't always see the end result, it is always fun to see how it all comes together!

We are sometimes puzzled for a minute or two when we get a request for an unusual theme. When we had to create a cupcake tower for a circus/dinosaur theme, it was exactly one we had to think about. After seeing the cutest invitation (here's a glimpse of it), we knew exactly what to do. I know, everything is possible, right?

It is time for a summer luau! Designed for a boy's fourth birthday, these cupcakes were inspired by a picture of the giant tiki to be used as a decorative element for the event. We made our own version of it in fondant and added classic luau elements: grass skirts, lei, flowers, and some sharks (the birthday boy's favorites!). Love how the cupcakes are displayed with the colorful starfish, sand and luau girls.

It's been so long since the last post, it is time to catch up! I have a lot of pictures to share, so let's start with this very special event - my baby girl's fourth birthday.

Those close to me know how much I like to have friends over and celebrate. So what better occasion to play party planner! First came the request of a fairy party from my daughter, followed by the research, online shopping late at night, sketching...

I turned to my friend Shawna (Trio Events) for the signage, banners, the fabulous kids table, and some unique decorative touches. A second before the guests walked in, the backyard's transformation into a magical fairy land was completed.

One of the fun project we worked on this past week was a first birthday celebration for a little Korean girl. The mom asked for a mix of traditional with the Korean dol topper, and a touch of fun with the girly flowers all around the cake (inspired by this cake).

Dol is a Korean tradition that celebrates the birthday of a
one-year-old baby. This ceremony blesses the child with a prosperous
future and has taken on great significance in Korea. The birthday

The past few weeks have been filled with many extraordinary projects, and this is one we couldn't wait to share with you! Modern's Family Julie Bowen celebrated her twin boys first birthday last week at the COOP, and we got the privilege to provide the sweet treats for the event.

What started with a cake and cupcake tower project quickly turned into a colorful dessert table. First we couldn't wait to display our French macarons, then we made some custom cookies, cake pops, and voila! Hope you enjoy the pictures!

We were so excited to participate in our first bridal show this week. The London Hotel in West Hollywood was a perfect venue. The staff of The Wedding Salon was great and the event was a huge success. Our team was nearly hoarse after speaking with hundreds of brides, planners, and other industry professionals.

Our display featured a twist on the traditional cupcake tower with a three-tiered cake and a single layer of beautifully decorated cupcakes. (Of course, more cupcakes can be added larger events.) Elegant jars were filled with our French Macarons - a new addition to our Blue Cupcake repertoire.

Yesterday's event was such an amazing experience, yet again. After last year's success, it was hard to imagine a larger crowd, more bakeries, and SO many cupcakes! Blue Cupcake celebrated its second year anniversary this weekend, as my son was celebrating his fifth birthday. The company was created 2 years ago and the first event was, you guessed it, my little boy's birthday! I wanted to create a beautiful cupcake display, then another one came along a week later, and it has never stopped since!

This year, the request was very straight forward: "Maman, I want a Hot Wheels party". So my little assistant and I went to the drawing board and came up with this vintage race car concept. A balloon display was planned as the back drop for the dessert table, but somehow our family photos worked just great.

With the perfect sunny and warm weather, the yard was filled with race tracks. The small and big kids all had a great time! Now the pics...

Downtown LA's Holiday Market

For the next couple of weeks, you can get cupcakes and do some holiday shopping at the same time! Visit the 3rd and Spring Holiday Market in the atrium - entrance on Spring Street via Lot 44 Coffee.

The market will be open from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. and will feature a wide variety of hand-made holiday gifts by local artists including fine arts and crafts, paintings, sculptures, photography, jewelry, clothing, ornaments, soaps, and candles. Check back often as vendors rotate and the selection of goods will vary daily.

(Divine) Pumpkin Cupcake

Our trip to the pumpkin farm last weekend

I never thought I would use divine to describe a pumpkin dessert. My mom and grandmas always cooked according to the French Canadian traditions, and pumpkin was no where to be found on any holiday table. Trough my years of sharing holidays with friends since living here, I have sampled many pumpkin pies, breads, puddings... It was just natural to introduce this flavor as the bright fruit is making a strong presence in the markets this time of year.

To my taste, I find that spices in pumpkin desserts can be overpowering. This treat uses a blend of spices to enhance the flavor of the fruit, from the bright orange flesh to the tasty seeds. The result is a fresh take on this classic flavor, with a moist pumpkin cake (made with organic pumpkin!) filled with a pumpkin spice mousse, topped with cream cheese frosting and brown sugar cinnamon roasted pumpkin seeds. Yum!

I am so thrilled to be posting those pictures today! This dessert table came to life with the help of my friend Laetitia, owner of Praline Bakeshop (he website is under construction, but I will let you know as soon as it is ready!), the well known specialty cookie vendor at the Century City farmer's market.

When we were asked to create a dessert table to celebrate a wedding anniversary, we combined our expertise to offer an array of delectable sweets. From the main two-tier cake to lemon tarts, English toffee bars, choux à la crème, white chocolate marshmallows, sugar cookies, French macaroons, and cupcakes (of course!), we had something to please every guests present to this family affair. So now the pictures...

This display was created for a baby shower with a carousel theme. My dear client created an outstanding decor with antique carousel horses and toys, enormous candy jars, the most beautiful balloon arrangements. All cupcake enthusiasts know what a privilege it is to be mentioned on Cupcakes Take The Cake. What a nice surprise it was this morning to find out that Blue Cupcake had a whole article, complete with many pictures, on our cupcake towers! Here are a few more you haven't seen yet...

This first tower was inspired by the Spring Wedding Cupcake Tower, with the addition of dark blue accents. This addition transformed the look of the tower all together, changing the very vibrant design to a more classic rendition. I was thrilled with the result, so were the bride and groom!

This second wedding cupcake tower was for a couple who wanted to reflect their passion for the great outdoors. The bride originally felt in love with this tower, and she also wanted to keep the design simple while adding a modern twist.

I assembled this cake for an event this morning, and I couldn't wait to share the pictures! This was my first official try at a figurine (well, besides animals that is!), and I am so trilled by the result! Working with all those sweet colors and flowers was just refreshing, satisfying my creative side after all the hard work of the past months.

First of, I would like to say a big THANK YOU to all 400 cupcake lovers who braved the heat to get a cupcake today! The guests were offered the best iced late in town and a cupcake of their choice.

Blue Cupcake is Back Downtown LA!

This blog has been quiet in the past month since I was very busy working on an exciting new venture. In partnership with Lot 44 Coffee in downtown Los Angeles, our cupcakes will now be available in permanence! Starting next Monday, July 20, the classic flavors such as red velvet, chocolate, coconut and vanilla will be offered, in addition to many seasonal flavors - yes, the very popular strawberry cupcakes will be baked fresh for the event!

So please come visit between 11am to 2pm - 257 S. Spring Street, Suite 115, L.A. - next Monday for FREE cupcakes and coffee!

Bon Voyage Cupcake (Assembled just for fun in 2 minutes after I sent some samples to a client!)

Tomorrow morning, I will be flying off the Barcelona, Spain. This is a long awaited vacation! So no farmer's market this week, but Blue Cupcake will be back in Pershing Square on May 13th, and in Century City May 14th.
